IFBLS Statement regarding COVID-19 Testing

The global COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in several challenges to health care systems in more than 185 countries. Laboratory diagnostic services are using testing systems distributed under emergency approval procedures to enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities for patient care. A consequence of these actions is there are many unknown variables that affect clinical efficacy of test results which have an effect on successful patient treatment. Factors that affect clinical efficacy include reduced sensitivity and specificity which result in false negative test results.

IFBLS and its member organizations are working together to ensure quality testing along with regulatory bodies within their countries. We recognize the significant efforts made by the World Health Organization and appreciate the continued communication and updates provided to all health care providers and the public.

IFBLS fully supports the activities and actions that WHO has taken during this critical time and offer our assistance when requested.
